Just outside of Fussen, is the region of the King's Castles. Ann & I are staying in the valley between Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles in a lovely hotel called, perfectly enough, Schlosshotel Lisl: Castle hotel Lisl.
We traveled up to Neuschwanstein in a two-horse drawn wagon. The grade up/down is very steep. Mom, I don't know how you walked it in 1965! Inside the castle, on the tour, we walked up over 100 steps--most of which were in circular staircases. The castle is ok, as castles go. It would've been brilliant had King Ludwig II lived to finish it. He died a mysterious death in 1886 at the age of 40. He was found drowned in a few inches of water in a lake near Munich. Many believe he was done-in by his doctor who had him certified as "mad". Hence, the nickname "Mad King Ludwig" ever since.
We are taking the rest of today off. We're both tired and seeking rest time. The weather is beautiful: high 60s, clear skies, & a cool breeze to keep things fresh. Better than the snow they're having in Minne-snow-ta these days!
